Getting from place to place in Japan can take many forms. As a tour operator committed to sustainable travel, we prefer to use public transportation where possible. Japan’s very developed network of rail lines makes this feasible. The Japan Rail network has a global reputation for its reliability and speed in moving travelers from one end of the country to the other. The bullet trains are famous for their ability to cover long distances in a relatively short span of time.
Sometimes the logistics of rail travel can be complicated as in addition to JR there are a number of private train companies operating throughout Japan. These private rail lines operate to a number of well known and lesser known sights and in almost all cases the Japan Rail Pass is not valid on these private rail lines.
We may also use other modes of conveyance in our tours. While bullet trains shorten the distances between cities, some of Japan’s most spectacular sights are found far from even a simple local rail line. In some locations we may use local buses to travel through the countryside to our destination. In cities, we might use subway or light rail services. .
When traveling to one of the many smaller islands that make up the archipelago, we may also use ferries. If mountainous terrain requires it, we may use cable-cars, gondolas, or funiculars. To enjoy the benefits of slow travel, we might cycle around an area to take it in.
In sum, we make our way around the countryside as the Japanese do. This provides you with a further means to experience Japan firsthand, and we try to limit the use of private motor-coaches unless necessary or requested for bespoke group departures.
Whichever mode of transportation we use, we’ll make all the necessary arrangements, leaving you nothing to worry about. You can rest assured that we will convey you safely to your next destination.
If you are planning to travel with a Japan Rail Pass, we can create an itinerary for you accordingly but please note that a JR Pass may not provide the best value for your plans. We are happy to discuss your requirements with you to see if a Rail Pass would be good value.
